When Abe and the boys went to feed a couple of weeks ago, they saw something lying on the ground. At first, Leo thought it was a baby guinea and that one of the females must have had a secret nest somewhere (they wander all over the property). On closer inspection, it turned out to be a wild Montezuma quail, which is a variety that is becoming endangered.
Unfortunately, it was already dead. It must have come into the corral and got attacked by some of our other poultry. Guineas are extremely territorial and do not take well to strangers. We have seen a group of guineas attack a roadrunner before and they are vicious. This little quail didn’t stand a chance.
Still, it’s good to know that we have these little guys around. And it was great to be able to look at it up close. Aren’t they beautiful?
